The goal was to reveal the emphasized basic research fields (EBRF) of MS and to observe its socio-economic networking. High ranked keywords for the former and the number of co-authored papers for the latter were used along with many MS related papers. The obtained results are: (1) The EBRF of MS of JAERI were typically represented by the keywords of ion irradiation, actinides, etc., i.e., those having a strong relation to the nuclear field. Regarding actinides, the socio-economic networking between JAERI and PS occurred at the growth rate of 3-4% per 25 years, but 8% during the past 5 years. This implies that the research cooperation between the two was markedly enhanced. (2) The EBRF of MS between JAERI and 5 selected research bodies (SRB) represented by Tokyo University was directly compared and revealed that only 7 keywords as typically represented by neutron and accelerators. After overlapping, JAERI and SRB seem to be raising the national standard level.

The design, performance, philosophy, lessons learned and advantages of the neutron total scattering spectrometer for hydrogenous materials, FAST, under consideration for the J-PARC-JSNS, are described. In particular, novel instrumentation concept such as the small fractional scattered neutron flight path, = L/(L+L), where L is the incident flight path, moderator to sample, L is the scattered neutron flight path from sample to detector, is presented and their expected performance at the JSNS is considered.

To understand a socio-economic effect of basic research in JAERI, the stimulation and promotion of social interrelations through a formation of networking was studied quantitatively. (1)Worldwide trend of MS was studied by INIS by means of top {100} keywords as input. Research activity of MS in JAERI represented by top {100} keywords is not much different from that of other nuclear advanced countries participated to INIS. (2)Emphasized basic research fields (EBRF) of MS in JAERI can be clarified by selected keywords of "ion irradiation" and "actinides", those have a strong relation to nuclear. For actinides, the growth rate of networking between JAERI and PS was of order of 3-4% per 25 years and 8% per recent 5 years. The rate of networking formation is markedly increased recently. (3)Between JAERI and the other 5 selected research bodies, only 7 out of over 110 keywords such as "neutron" and "accelerators" were overlapped. In the overlapped region the two compensated and uplifted the national standard level each other.

A steam explosion simulation code JASMINE is under development at JAERI for the assessment of steam explosion impacts on the integrity of containment vessel during severe accidents in light water reactors. Selected alumina and corium steam explosion experiments, KROTOS-44, 42, 37 and FARO-L33 were simulated with JASMINE code. The experimentally observed difference of the steam explosion intensity with the two materials, alumina and corium, was reproduced in the simulations without changing the model parameters related to the fine fragmentation process, but based on the difference in the premixing behavior predicted by the simulations. The simulation of corium experiments showed more fraction of the melt droplets frozen during premixing, as well as more void fraction, and those two points were likely to be the primary reasons of weak interactions in corium experiments.

In the structural integrity assessment of reactor pressure vessel, fracture toughness values are estimated by assuming that the radiation effect on fracture toughness is equivalent to that on Charpy properties. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the correlation between both properties especially on irradiation embrittlement. In this paper, we present the fracture toughness data obtained by applying the master curve approach that was adopted recently in the ASTM test method. Materials used in this study are five ASTM A533B class 1 steels and one weld metal. Neutron irradiation for Charpy-size specimens as well as standard Charpy-v specimens was carried out at the Japan Materials Testing Reactor. The shifts of the reference temperature on fracture toughness due to neutron irradiation are evaluated. Correlation between the fracture toughness reference temperature and Charpy transition temperature is established. Based on the correlation, the optimum test temperature for fracture toughness testing and the method to determine a lower bound fracture toughness curve are discussed.

Times Cited Count:38 Percentile:90.12(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)In this study, stress-relieved specimens and recrystallized specimens of pure Mo and Mo-Re alloys (Re content=2,4,5,10,13 and 41wt%) were neutron irradiated up to 20dpa at various temperatures (681-1072K). On microstructure observation, sigma phase and chi phase precipitates were observed in all irradiated Mo-Re alloys. Voids were observed in all irradiated specimen, and dislocation loops and dislocations were observed in the specimens that were irradiated at lower temperatures. On Vickers hardness testing, all of the irradiated specimens showed hardening. Especially Mo-41Re were drastically embrittled after irradiation at 874K or less. From these results, authors discuss about relation between microstructure development and radiation hardening, embrittlement, and propose the most efficient Re content and thermal treatment for Mo-Re alloys to be used under irradiation condition.

The objectives of this study is to clarify calculation accuracy for the Doppler effect of the resonance materials; erbium (Er), tungsten (W) and thorium (ThO). Doppler effect measurements were carried out in a fast neutron spectrum (XX-2 core) and in an intermediate neutron spectrum (XXI-1D2 core) by the sample-heated and reactivity worth measurement method up to 800C using FCA. The experiment was analyzed with the standard analysis method for fast reactor cores at FCA with the use of the JENDL-3.2. The SRAC system was also used to investigate the calculation accuracy of the system and to compare it with that of the FCA standard analysis method. The standard analysis method underestimated for the XX-2 core and agreed the experiments within the experimental errors for the XXI-1D2 core. The analysis with the SRAC system gave smaller values by 3%10% for the Er sample and bigger values by 2%5% for the W sample than the standard analysis method.

Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:0.01(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)Doppler effect experiments on resonance materials for ROX fuels were carried out to examine the calculation accuracy in the intermediate neutron spectrum using Fast Critical Assembly (FCA) at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. This study is the second phase of a series of the Doppler effect experiments on the resonance materials, which is following the measurements in the fast neutron spectrum. The Doppler effect was measured as the sample reactivity change between the heated and unheated samples. The cylindrical samples of the resonance materials such as erbium (Er), tungsten (W) and thorium (ThO) were used. The sample was heated up to 800C at the center of the FCA core. The Doppler effect measurements were analyzed using the SRAC 95 code system with the use of JENDL 3.2. The calculated values agreed with the experiment within the experimental error for the W and ThO samples, while the calculation overestimated the experiment for the Er sample about 10 %.

Times Cited Count:160 Percentile:99.28(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)Reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel is the primary candidate structural material for ITER Test Blanket Modules and DEMOnstration fusion reactor because of its excellent dimensional stability under irradiation and lower residual activity as compared with the Ni bearing steels such as the austenitic stainless steels. In this paper, microstructural features, tensile, fracture toughness, creep and fatigue properties of a reduced activation martensitic steel F82H (8Cr-2W-0.04Ta-0.1C) are reported before and after irradiation, in addition to the design concept used for development of this alloy. A large number of collaborative test results including those generated under the IEA working group implementing agreements are collected and are used to evaluate the feasibility of use of F82H steel as one of the reference alloys. The effect of metallurgical variables on the irradiation hardening is reviewed and compared with the results obtained from irradiation experiments.
